The 2008 Sheriff & Youth “Live-In” Camp Program
was conducted by the National Federation for Just Communities
of Western New York, Inc and the Erie County Sheriff’s Department,
and it was fully funded and sponsored by the Delaware North Companies.
Held at the beautiful Camp Lakeland in Franklinville, NY, the
goal of this 5-day residential camp program was to enable a diverse
group of Western New York teenagers, ages 14-16, who are leaders
or potential leaders in their school community, to experience
direct positive exposure to members of the Erie County Sheriff’s
Department.
This program
provided the means for frank and open dialogue between the deputies,
who serve as camp counselors, NFJC staff, and the youth participants.
The camp experience included communication exercises, discussions,
and many recreational activities that bring the counselors and
teens together. The campers had the opportunity to hike, swim,
play baseball, basketball, volleyball, mountain bike, canoe, and
kayak with the counselors. Twenty-five (25) teenagers attended
this year’s camp, and the hope is that the impact of their
experiences will be multiplied in their home and school communities.
If you are
interested in attending the camp, or if you would like to refer
someone to the program, please keep checking this website regularly
